Cuckoo Gin Tasting

Gin tasting and distillery tours seem so popular at the moment. Everyone seems to be doing it! And I did wonder why all of a sudden, there is an influx of people making their own gin. Why did this happen? Why ARE we all drinking flavoured Gins!? My favourite tipple is Martini Rosso … which I get varying comments about from bartenders! (why isn’t this more popular? It’s lovely! That’s another thread though) I used to think I didn’t like gin…only to realise it was actually tonic I didn’t like! On a very drunken weekend away with friends, I was introduced to gin & lemonade! Who knew?!

And so I was bought tickets for my birthday for a Cuckoo Gin Tasting & Distillery tour. I booked on a Friday night event in December and went with several family members, which also included a small jackapoo! Nice to have dog friendly venues!

The home of Cuckoo Gin is Brindle Distillery in Chorley, Lancashire. The distillery is in a barn on Holmes Farm; with the farm serving as the source of everything! It’s very much a farm to bottle business model!

The evening begins in the relaxed and rustic barn sitting on benches in the middle of the barn, with Mark and Tom sharing their story. How the distillery became a business and why they choose the name Cuckoo Gin! It’s such a lovely story and inspirational to see people like me and you from Lancashire, create businesses and become entrepreneurs. They also answer my question from earlier! So if you too want to know why gin became so popular all of a sudden, you’ll have to visit!

Glasses of their signature gin and suggested tonic pairing are served during the talk, and they’re not skimpy servings either! Mark describes the botanicals used to create their debut gin, before talking about their next gin which is closer to his heart.

Solace is the next gin tasting. There is a very poignant reason behind this name and creation, which was made with love, for Marks wife who was battling cancer. Even now after recovery, a percentage of proceeds are donated to charity. This started as limited edition but due to popularity looks to be a permanent offering, which I’m super pleased about as it’s my favourite of theirs!

The last tasting was paired with food! A really lovely charcuterie board to share, which was served alongside Sunshine Gin. The Cuckoo Gin team realised they were missing a sweeter, fruity number in their repertoire and so this was created!

After a bit of food, Mark explained how they were dipping their toes in to creating other spirits, with Cuckoo vodka and rum also being made on the farm.

Cuckoo Gin Distillery Tour

After the food & drinks, we were taken on a tour around the barn. Not only is the barn a social space, but also the distillery. Mark explained the gin making process and showed us the different stills used.

After the tour, we got to chill and chatter with the rest of our group. There’s a fully stocked bar so we could have a few more drinkipoos, and yes they sell drinks other than gin!

It was such a lovely evening and I recommend it for everyone; couples, groups and families.
